CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Flower Girl

“Well,” Cassie said as she and Emily put their pajamas on, “dinner was a total fail.”

“But not completely,” Emily said, buttoning up her flannels. “They were in good moods. No one fought.”

“I guess that’s true,” Cassie said. And she’d seen her mom kiss her dad, which had to be a good sign. “We need to make sure they’re okay, though. Really cement their relationship while they’re on this good path right now.”

“How do we do that?” Emily asked.

Cassie snapped her fingers. “Mom needs to write a love note to Daddy. Then he’ll be all happy with her and feeling loving too. And he can send her flowers.”

“But . . .” Emily wrinkled her nose. “We’d have to tell them about our plan.”

“Or.” Cassie leaned forward, grinning conspiratorially. “We can do it for them, and they’ll just think it’s from each other.”

“That’s awesome! How will get flowers?”

“I’ll handle the flowers.” Cassie still had a few dollars in her piggy bank. “You write the note.”

“For tomorrow?”

Cassie nodded. “Yeah. Let’s do this.”

*~*

Cassie walked up to Ms. Timber’s desk on Tuesday morning, anxious to remind her about the presentations.

“I know,” Ms. Timber said when she saw her. “You’re going first. Don’t even worry about it.”

Cassie smiled in relief and went to her desk.

“I checked on your hamburger,” Todd said. “It’s still there.”

Cassie spun around to face him. “You didn’t tell anyone about it, did you?”

“No.” He shrugged. “Why not? Is it a secret?”

She took a deep breath, telling herself to calm down. He’d ruin her whole presentation if he told everyone. “I just want it to be a surprise, that’s all. Everyone will see it today when I present.”

“Okay.”

He went back to his desk, and Cassie slipped her hand into her pocket, making sure she still had her money. She’d have to act quickly after school if she was going to make it to the flower shop across the street and back before the buses left. It would be her only chance to get flowers for her mom, though. She had to try.

The day ticked slowly by, and finally it was almost over.

“All right, class, let’s clear your desks,” Ms. Timber said. “Put away your math assignments, and let’s hear some presentations.”

Cassie took a deep breath and put her math binder away, glad she’d finished her homework in class. One less thing to worry about at home.

“Cassandra, I believe you’ve been waiting. You’re up first.” Ms. Timber smiled at her and got her video recorder out.

Cassie stood up, her heart already doing a little jig in her throat. She took a step toward the desk to pick up her replicator—

—and the fire alarm went off.

Ms. Timber frowned. “Hang on.” She stuck her head out in the hall and conferred with the other teachers, then came back in. “All right, fire drill. Everyone line up by the door.”

The students did so, Cassie more agitated than she wanted to admit. Her fingers twitched with nervous energy.

They went outside and lined up at their usual spot against the fence.
